FISHING IN COLORADO

Jun 04,2016

Fishing in the Rocky Mountains can be very rewarding. Not only do you get away from the hustle and bustle of the city to relieve some stress, you also get to see majestic views and scenery that you won't see on a postcard. I go fishing for trout every chance I get. A friend of mine introduced me to ice fishing adding more months of fishing to my schedule during the year.

Colorado has almost 4,100 ponds, lakes and reservoirs and 18,000 miles of rivers and streams. Whether you use flies, bait, lures or spinners to catch your fish, you should never have a problem with finding a place to go. I have provided several links below to guide you to your destiny.

There are several species of trout in Colorado. The most common is the Rainbow Trout which can be found in most of the cold water rivers and lakes, which include many plains reservoirs. Some of the other species are Brown, Brook, Cutthroat, Lake, Golden and Bull Trout. There are several mixed species of trout that I won't list. They are all cold water fish.

Cold climate is the single most important feature of trout habitat in high elevation waters. Trout grow very slow when the ice cover lasts for months and the summer months are relatively cool. The rivers are fast flowing with cold water and are a great habitat for trout.

Another group of fish species can be found in the warmer lakes of Colorado. They are Small and Large Mouth Bass, Bluegill, Catfish, Crappie, Perch and Sunfish. Other fish species in the state include Kokanee Salmon, Splake, Wiper, Walleye, Saugeye, Northern Pike and Tiger Muskie.
